5 March - In accordance with Corps order, no attacks were to be launched on this date and one battalion of each regiment was to be rested and reorganized prepared to assume the assault role on the following day. Lines were held by two battalions in each regiment. Co B, 1st Bn, 21st Marines was detached from the 2d Bn, 21st Marines and together with Co C, rejoined the 1st Bn, 21st Marines in TAs 199-S, T, and Y where the battalion was reequipped and replacements provided. Steps had already ben taken to provide replacements and equip to the 3d Bn, 9th Marines, in division reserve. Little enemy contact took place during the day. Artillery and naval guns fired harassing fires throughout the day, and one airstrike was conducted in Hill 362 area (TA-219-U).
