13 March - Mopping up operations were continued at -730. The 3d Bn, 21st Marines was withdrawn and reverted to the 21st Marines in a bivouac area west of MOTOYAMA village. The 1st and 3d Bns, 9th Marines continued the attack against the enemy pocket from the east. Tanks were used and some hostile emplacements were knocked out and caves closed, but little advance was made. The 1st Bn, 21st Marines continued to protect the right flank of the 5th Marine Division. the 3d Reconnaissance Co, attached to the 21st Marines, reverted to division control in the vicinity of the division command post. A destroyer, with the Asst Division Naval Gunfire Officer aboard, was employed during the day in firing at enemy caves and emplacements in the cliffs overlooking the beach area in the northern part of the 5th Marine Division zone of action in order to support the 1st Bn, 21st Marines in protecting the right flank of that division. The 12th Marines continued to reinforce the fires of the 13th Marines. The situation at 1800 was as shown on Enclosure B (23), Situation at 1800, 13 March.
